Exhibitions and Museum

The Bryan Holden Working Horse Collection

The exhibition continues to include the history of the stables and the life of a horse on a country estate, culminating in the Bryan Holden Working Horse Collection, a fascinating collection of working horse memorabilia, collated over the course of a lifetime. For hundreds of years we survived on a horse economy – from agriculture and war to hunting and racing, horses were the back bone of many industries. Learn about the lives of ‘Charlie’ the last railway horse and ‘Robin’ the pit pony along with fine examples of their working harness including horse brasses, horseshoe patterns, saddlery and a fascinating yet eye-watering array of antiquarian vets’ equipment and farriers’ tools.

Museum of Rural Life

The Hannington Vintage Tractor Club operates a working museum on fair days and static exhibitions at other times. Small yet fascinating, the museum gives a glimpse into agricultural life in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

All of the above are usually open whenever the house and gardens are open and included in the cost of an admission ticket. Please note however that during major events and their set up (particularly those that are held in the stables) the availability of the exhibitions may be limited or included in the cost of a valid event ticket as opposed to a valid gardens ticket.
